Student Testimonial-Esther deVries

We would like to thank Esther for sharing her experience at Woodstock Christian School during our Kindergarten Information Evening.  Her story had our audience laughing and our staff holding back tears!

"Hi my name is Esther de Vries. I’ve been at W.C.S. for 10 years, from JK to grade 8. Here are some of my favourite memories: Nap time because my friends and I would secretly talk. Story time because my classmates and I would all take turns being the top-dog and getting to sit on Mrs.V’s knee. While everyone else sat criss cross applesauce which I could never do. I loved buddy time, and still do, using chalk on the pavement, running mileage club laps, and fingerpainting.
While being here at W.C.S I have been involved in many extracurricular activities. Soccer, hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, cross country, and battle of the books. And this year we even had the pleasure of playing football at the Rogers centre in Toronto. I love going to these events because I meet new people, and have fun playing sports for the glory of God. I also had the opportunity to be in student’s counsel. Student’s counsel organizes the pizza and sub days. And they plan some of the special days our school has wacky hair day, spirit day, pajama day, moustache and beard day, bubble gum day, winter wonderland day, and, my favourite, the amazing race, which happens on the last day of school.
But, as much as I wish it was, school isn’t only fun and games.
You do a poem in grade 1, it’s scary presenting in front of class by yourself for the first time. All of our spelling words in grade 2 went on The Word Wall on the side chalkboard, by the end of the year you could barely see the chalkboard. I remember when I had my first major project, the tree project, in grade 3. I thought my tree was so cool because it had a hornets nest in it. In grade 4 we start learning the recorder. As I hear the grade four’s playing their instruments across the hall from my classroom I think wow Mrs. Martin has brought us a long way in band class. In grade 5 we started speeches, I was way more nervous than I should have been. In grade 6 I had a huge remembrance day project, I learned all about John Mcrae. Grade 7 I started this thing called the science fair project, I had no idea what was coming to me. But I survived… thanks to the teachers greatly appreciated help and encouragement!! I love being in grade 8 we get special privileges. Like the priorities in choir, our first choice in electives, and besides just learning our instrument in band class my class and I get to build ukuleles.
Overall the most important thing about my school is being able to do devotions in the mornings, prayer before lunchtime, bible classes, Godly teachers, and a Christian view on everyday life. I have been growing in the faith since I walked through the J.K doors on my first day of school. W.C.S. has been a big impact on how I see things. I make new experiences here everyday and will never forget them."

Lifehack

Lifehack - A strategy or technique adopted in order to manage one's time and daily activities in a more efficient way. (Oxford Online Dictionary)

Are you as drawn to lifehacks as I am? - you know, the ingenious (Remember MacGuyver?) ideas that show up on your Facebook newsfeed from time to time: How to separate an egg using an empty water bottle; how to slice a handful of cherry tomatoes in seconds using two saucers or plastic lids. You get the idea. If you had nothing else to do, you could spend all day reading (and trying) 100 Life Hacks to Make Life Easier or 50 Life Hacks to Simplify Your World. If you had that much time on your hands, however, you might as well do things the long or hard way:  you wouldn't need lifehacks.

We have lifehacks in school, too. They were in existence long before the term 'lifehack' was invented in 2004. Ask your upper-grade child about tricks for remembering the 9 times table, the order of mathematical operations, the names of the planets in order, or the names of the music notes on the lines of the treble staff, and you will probably learn some of them. Memory tricks (officially known as mnemonic devices) such as using the first letters of words in a sentence or phrase, putting words to music (I still sing the names of Jesus' disciples if I want to remember them.), and adding actions, are a few examples of lifehacks your children can use to "manage [their] time and daily activities in a more efficient way." (For more educational lifehacks, 'just google it'!)

Our spiritual life goes better with lifehacks too. By our example and our training, we can teach our children how to consistently live the Christian life, filled with His peace and joy. One blogger, Joshua Benton, has suggested four spiritual lifehacks which are summed up for you here:

1.Rhythm:  To live a solid spiritual life, create a rhythm of prayer and serving, work and rest.
2.Pray:  Prayer helps you refocus and reorientates where you're at and where you're going.
3.Submit:  Submitting to the wants and desires of God helps you begin to see how temporary stuff is and how eternal people are.
4.Walk with Jesus:  Learn His teachings, learn His ways, for his yoke, his teachings, are easy and his burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30). Part of the spiritual life hack is studying God's word. Meditating on it. Focusing on it….Jesus. He gets you through it all. He is present and walks with you through it all. He does the work for you. Best. Spiritual Life Hack. Ever.

Snow Days

SNOW DAYS

As I write this, it is dark out (6:15 am), the snow is blowing and visibility is near zero. It is definitely a 'snow day', one for which it was easy to decide to cancel the buses and school for the day. Last Friday was not such an easy call. The decision on whether to run the buses is often a difficult one. We depend on the expertise of Lang's Bus Lines, who also cover a large area of routes in Oxford County.  On Friday, on some of our pick-up areas the roads were treacherous and in others it was clear. The forecast for the day looked promising, and the plows were out clearing the roads. However, at 6:20 when Lang Bus Lines cancelled their buses we made the decision to cancel for the day as well.  As conditions improved during the day, I wished we had been able to have school. Yet, I am very thankful for the wisdom of the other local bus lines as they make their decisions. For them, as for us, the safety of our children is of utmost importance.

Thanks to all of you for your support in this matter.

The other day I was reading from Luke 18 with the Junior Kindergarten class. We were talking about how Jesus told the little children to come to him, even while his disciples tried to send them away. At the end of our Bible reading, the question prompt was "If you were one of the children who got to sit on Jesus' lap, what would you say to Him?" I asked the students that question and the responses I received served as a wonderful reminder of how we can approach our Lord in confidence at any time, thanks to Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. In the circle they shared the following things: "I would say 'I love you'", "Thanks" (I asked, "For what?"- "For creating the world."), "I would give him a hug." How humbling, how innocent yet insightful. How often do I come to God in prayer and only end up asking Him for provision of needs, forgetting how he already knows all things? May this be a wonderful reminder to us all of how great our God is, yet how intimately he knows and cares for us.

WCS is the place to be!

Woodstock Christian School is the place to be!!!

Re-commitment forms for next school year went home last week. My prayer is that you will continue to send your children to WCS. As you fill out your forms and return them to the school, think about this… your child(ren) spend about 7.5 hours a day at school. That means a big part of their waking hours are lived at school. WOW! Your child(ren) are the most precious people in your lives, and you want the very best for them! Where do you want them to be educated? At WCS, your child(ren) receive an education which is centred on the Lord Jesus Christ- to nurture them to live a life of praise and service to God! At WCS, dedicated teachers are accredited to teach your child(ren), with many of them holding specialist certification in their area of expertise. They love the children in their class and are committed to their well-being as they learn and grow. At WCS, each day begins with God's word, as students and teachers spend time with God seeking his blessing on every part of the day. At WCS, your children are challenged by a curriculum aligned with the Ontario Ministry of Education expectations, ever-adapting to 21st century learning goals, and built on the mission and vision of the school. At WCS, your children are a part of a loving, caring, supportive community in which they are challenged to think about whose they are, how they should live and learn, and what it means to live as children of God in this world. We don't know what their future looks like, but God does and we trust He leads us all as we nurture the children that He has entrusted to us.
Please pass the word to friends, neighbours and relatives that WCS is the place that they should explore as an option for their children's education!

Mana, manna, manna

Manna, manna, manna.

Manna here, manna there, manna everywhere. Manna bread, manna crepes, manna casserole ..... and on and on. You get the picture.
Last week in SK, we heard the story of the Israelites in the desert receiving this wondrous white gift tasting somewhat of milk and honey with a bit of oil mixed in. The children all went into their  imaginary tents with hungry tummies and woke up in awe to this provision.
One of the things that this story taught us was that God gives us everything we need, everyday. As God gave the Israelites fresh food every day, God gives us a fresh start every day and every year. God wants us to trust Him and rest in Him.
But as the story goes on, Gods people were not satisfied with this manna. While it gave the people everything that was necessary for life, it did not fully satisfy.  It was simply a foretaste of the delicious milk and honey that God had waiting for them. When God's people entered their promised land, God no longer sent the manna. They now had the real thing!
As we start a new year 2015, it is our prayer that you will trust God to supply your needs, the manna, but that you will also experience Jesus as your source of life and satisfaction... true milk and honey!

Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2015

It is a new year-2015! What will this year bring? New opportunities, hopes, challenges, joys, struggles and blessings await us. In a world of so much unrest, brokenness and fear, we move forward with confidence and anticipation knowing that THE WHOLE EARTH IS FILLED WITH THE GLORY OF GOD!!! In Jeremiah 29:11, our Heavenly Father tells us: "For I know the plans I have for you….". We don't know what the future holds, BUT we do know who holds the future! With God's leading, we will continue to shine for Him here at WCS!
