Track & Field

Track and Field

We have been busily readying ourselves for Track and Field next Friday, May 23. It is the day that many of our students have been looking forward to these last number of weeks. It is a great way for every student to receive their exercise for the day, as they run, jump, and throw for the Lord. I always tell my students, that even if you are not a runner, or jumper, you can always work to achieve your personal best.
Our primary students (up to grade 3) will strive to meet our school standards which will allow them to win a bronze, silver, or gold award for each event they enter. Since we are using standards in the primary grades, students will not be receiving participation ribbons; they will be receiving either a bronze, silver, or gold instead in the events that they complete. The results of this field day help us to choose the teams that represent the school in district action. Usually those who finish in the first two positions will be chosen for the school team, but many factors such as the results in another age group, or the number of events a student may enter also come into play.
A schedule will be posted in the Parent Link today to help parents plan to watch the events of their children. We are looking forward to the events next Friday (raindate Monday, the 26th), and have two more weeks to practice as we hope to peak and accomplish personal bests on Field Day. More information regarding the day will be found in next week’s Parent Link.

Community - Home & School

Community - Home and School!

Our school population of 184 students represents 95 different families. Parents have been entrusted with the ultimate responsibility to nurture and raise their children, so when they send their children to school, they share this responsibility with the teachers and principal. TOGETHER we take this God-given charge very seriously. When there are successes or concerns there is a sharing, a working-together with one another. It's a community working together empowering each child to flourish in God's Kingdom in all areas of his/her life.
Several times a year we have the blessing as members/families to meet together for the cause of Christian Education at Woodstock Christian School. This Thursday evening we will have our annual spring membership meeting - parents, teachers, Board of Directors, friends of Christian Education - to discuss the matters of our school society and to make decisions. At this time, we will celebrate what God is doing at WCS and look forward to the school year 2014-2015!!! We will be voting for new Board members, we will be voting on the proposed budget for next year, we will discuss the different mandates our committees carry out. As well, we will be blessed to see and listen our Grade 8 students (soon to be graduates) present their projects on how to our world can be more environmentally 'in tune' with the way God has instructed us in His word (Genesis 1:28, 29). It will be an evening in which we will be 'in community' in a tangible way!
What a blessing this is - I invite you to make it a priority to attend and pray that God will bless our time together.

Christian Education Week

Christian Education Week 2014!

CEW is such an exciting time at Woodstock Christian School. I am so thankful for this school; it is a great place for my children to be, and it has also been a blessing as a place of employment for myself! There are always so many great things going on it’s hard to know what I love the most about this place. I decided to list 5 things I witnessed this week that attest to how wonderfully amazing the hallways are here.

1.A principal who addresses all the students by name every time they pass her in the hallway.
2.Small prayers that were said before the music groups left to present at the festival.
3.The SK journal that questions why we call Good Friday, good?
4.Teachers that are able to encourage students by seeing them through the eyes of Jesus.
5.Encouraging words from visitors exclaiming how friendly everyone at the school is.

This week as we celebrate with a Volunteer Appreciation Assembly, Bus Driver Appreciation, Art Walk Open House, Picnic Lunch, Roamin’ Through Romans and Grand Friends Day, remember to thank those that came before us. Those that started this school. Thank God for them. Thank God for being here. Thank God for the ability to be part of this amazing place.

Dawn Streutker, Advancement Director

WCS - A Treasure

God has blessed Woodstock and community with a school that proclaims that "All creation belongs to the Lord!" in all areas of learning and living. There is not a square cm in the universe that does not belong to Him, and so we 'see' that in math, science, reading, writing, etc, etc. At WCS, it is easy to take our faith and learning for granted - many times we do not even seem excited that our learning is rooted in the love of Christ. But what a treasure we have! As students, teachers and community together, we are called to get 'on fire!' next week about Woodstock Christian School! Tell your neighbours, friends and relatives about the wonderful things that happen at WCS. Invite them to come and participate in the special activities that are planned. God is blessing us to bless our community, and next week is a special time to appreciate that!

Update: Once Again

MORE THAN JUST A STORE
It's time for an update on Once Again! It's been a busy few weeks and the work
is not done yet. Many volunteers have helped us with clearing out the store, washing
clothes, wiping down racks, moving furniture...the list goes on. These jobs were
tedious but very necessary and we are so thankful for the help. At this point, the restoration companies and contractors are
busy cleaning the store and doing all the necessary work to "deodorize" the space and some contents. We are not sure when
we will be open, but we will work hard to make it happen as soon as possible.
Through this process, one thing has really been made clear to us (as a thrift store Board and as staff at the store). This
store, this building.... it's so much more than just a place to shop. We are not just in business to sell gently used items at
484 Dundas... it's turning into a ministry. We are seeing how people have been brought together, new friendships have
formed, and how the store has become a regular visit for many customers. The fire has proved that. Customers are stopping
by or calling and asking how they can help. They want to see it open again because they miss having it as part of their
weekly stops. We have a volunteer that has terminal cancer. He was one of the first ones to contact us to ask how he could
help. Being at the store and working gives him something to look forward to each week and he misses that. Wow! We
aren't just selling clothes here, we are possibly adding some joy to someone's week?! That's a great purpose and mission
too. One elderly women who comes in multiple times a week to help out, spoke with a WCS school member (not knowing
the connection) and told her that there was a fire at her place of work and she's not able to work for a few weeks because of
it. She also said she felt a little lost without it. That's reason enough to kick it in high gear and get our doors open for
business as soon as possible. Our regular customers miss it, our volunteers miss it and as staff and Board we miss it too.
The fire was devastating, but it has brought new light to what we are all doing with the store. It's obviously a business,
and our goal is still to raise funds for WCS. However, in the mean time, we can focus on the mission that we have been
handed... to be a LIGHT in our community. God has big plans for us and we are so excited to see how they unfold.
Watch for details on a Grand REOPENING! We promise it'll be a fun event, and the Woodstock Firefighters promised
to help us celebrate in a big way. You won't want to miss out.

Living Resurrection

Living Resurrection

This week we celebrate with Christians everywhere the God's amazing love in sending His Son, Jesus to die and to rise again from the dead. In response to that we Christians can live the resurrection life; a life of serving the Lord and sharing God's love and grace with all around us. Paul talks in Romans of this life: "This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike "What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance!” Romans 8: 15, 16 (the Message)
I like the way that Paul describes the life of  a Christian as an adventure; a life in which God's spirit guides and takes us to places and people with whom He wants us  to share His love and peace. The students, teachers and community of Woodstock Christian School are part of this venture; God challenges us to live resurrection in our classrooms, our studies and in our interpersonal relationships. May we continue to let his Spirit guide us as we look forward to walking with Jesus each day and sharing in His  "unbelievable inheritance”.

Spring Fest Bazaar

Spring Fest

Though the weather outside was cold and blustery, inside the Oxford Auditorium it was warm and sunny on Saturday! Many, many people came to celebrate belonging to the Woodstock Christian School community - students, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, alumni,  friends , neighbours, and even strangers. So many people came out for the day to support the school, to meet with family and friends and just to have FUN being community! And fun it was - lots of laughter and visiting over breakfast and/or lunch, lots of bouncing and games in the children's play area, lots of shopping for those of us who love to shop, and then the finale - a very enthusiastic auction! The youngest person attending was 2 day-old Emmett Paul Wesselson, who anticipates enrolling as a WCS student for the year 2018, and the oldest person enjoying the festivities was one of the founding JKCS Board members, Mr. Klass Visbeek who is 94 years young.
What a blessing, what a wonderful time to celebrate, what an opportunity to thank God for the past, the present and the future of Christian Education in the Woodstock Community! As I think back on the day, I smile at how God has placed us all together to enjoy one another and to serve Him in a special way to be light in His world! Thank you, God!

What does WCS mean to grade 4!

1.   At Woodstock Christian school we know that EVERYONE is important and we try not to leave others out.
Grade 4 is part of a choir that can share the good news of Jesus through music to churches and people in the hospital and nursing homes.
2.  In Bible class we learn about God’s love for us but also for people in the Bible like King David.
In science class everything we learn points us to God and we are learning more about what God is like and more about His creation.
3.  Our teachers do not teach us false things.  Our teachers always encourage us to think.
Our teachers make learning fun!
3.  Every morning we have devotions, which challenge us to think and reflect on God and how we should treat others.
We talk to God often in grade 4.  We know that God loves it when we talk to him and so we take the time to talk to him often.
4.  Every week, we learn memory work, which are Bible verses and songs, that help us put God’s word in our hearts forever.
Our school has participated in several fundraisers this year.  Our fundraisers always are for people in need.
5.  We are a loving, caring community at Woodstock Christian School.  We try to practice good sportsmanship in intramurals, sports teams, and gym classes.
Our student’s council plans fun days for us and we always enjoy celebrating them.
6.  We can easily see that our principal, Mrs. Huinink-Buiter loves God.  Our teachers are loving and treat us with respect.
We also try to treat others loving and respectfully as well.

I love art!

I love art. I love teaching it, viewing it, learning about it. Each year at Woodstock Christian School, we, as educators, review one area of curriculum to learn about the latest updates in curricular requirements, the best practices in teaching, and if there are omissions or overlaps in our curriculum at the various grade levels. This year, the Arts are under review.
At our January professional development day, we were challenged to consider why the Arts were important for our students – as learners and as Christians. Some of the ideas we came up with are as follows:
Art is . . . Worship, Beauty-creating, Doing , Celebrating creation, Reflecting God’s glory, Participating in God’s creative nature, A language, Expression of ideas- a different ‘voice’, Experiencing creative community, Imagination , Limitless - without boundaries, Fun.
Why do you think it is important for your children to learn about, be involved in, and produce art -  whether visual art, drama, movement, or music? In a recent issue of the Christian Educator’s Journal, Gloria Goris Stronks wrote, "We deepen our spiritual dimension by learning or doing new things that might seem to be unrelated to faith, such as studying objects through a microscope...or by allowing ourselves to become deeply moved by art, poetry, and music. These activities encourage an appreciation for the significance of human life and for the great mysteries of the Bible and of creation...The spiritual dimension cannot always be explained in rational or intellectual terms, but it includes a wonderful sense of awe and gratitude." (Vol.53, No.1, October 2013 p.20)
During Christian Education week, we will be celebrating God’s gift of expression and creativity through drama, music, and our annual Art Walk through the halls (galleries) of Woodstock Christian School. Be sure to join us!

Remembrance Day

Just before Remembrance Day, Grade Two students worked hard on creating posters to help foster the tradition of remembrance among Canadians. Their posters were submitted to the Royal Canadian Legion Poster Contest.

This morning, their hard work was recognized as they had a surprise guest visit their classroom. Mr. Stephen Smith, from the Royal Canadian Legion Woodstock Branch came to share with the students the news that there were 5 students who won in the local contest, and two who went on to complete in the next level. Brett, Lauryn, Abby, Tyler, and Elena all placed in our local competition and were honoured with medals, certificates, and even some prize money. Congratulations to all the Grade Two students who worked hard and created some beautiful posters!
