Snow Days

Oh no!! Another Snow Day!!

To date we have had 6 snow days this school year - what a winter we are having! There are various reactions from students, parents and teachers. "Hooray!! Another family day!" "Oh no! The children / students are missing too much school!" "Now I have to get a sitter again.. why can't the school be open so we can drop them off for the day?" "How am I going to get all the curriculum covered?" "Our students are not getting in all the learning they need… "Snow days are the BEST!!" And there are several more one-liners that I have heard and/or read on social media.
We are experiencing a difficult, but beautiful winter in Canada. In the past number of years there have been very few snow days, so with all the snow days, there have been some concerns/questions from students and parents:
How is it decided when the buses are cancelled and school is closed?
Checking the Weather Network for weather warnings is the first step. If weather conditions are questionable, Lang's Bus Lines will send an email to the school reporting delays or cancellations. If they cancel buses, WCS buses are generally cancelled and the school is closed for the day. If I feel we might still run our buses, I will get a second opinion from our bus coordinator and/or bus drivers. Based on our collaboration, a decision is made with the safety of our children and drivers being our foremost consideration.
Are we going to make up the snow days?
When the yearly schedule is planned, extra days are scheduled to account for a number of snow days. When schools are closed due to weather issues, it is not required that the days be rescheduled. However because this year we have had so many (and perhaps even more are coming!), this year it has been decided to add several more school days - we will have regular school days on Friday, February 28th, Monday, March 17th, and Friday, May 16th. Two of these replace PA days and the other is taken from the end of March Break.
Why is the school not open on snow days even if the buses are cancelled?
For all schools in TVDSB that use bus service as the main transportation to bring students to and from school, the schools are closed when buses are cancelled. WCS also follows this guideline.
What do teachers do on Snow Days?
Several things…. We take a break like the rest of the school enjoying our families, sleeping in, taking time for an extra cup of coffee… we re-plan our lessons to fit the shorter week… we have extra time to plan / organize special events or new units of study…. we catch up on marking assignments and getting ready to write report cards… we meet together as staff for extra PD activities… we take time to engage in reading books / articles that we never seem to have time for…
Snow days may be good for your family or they may be frustrating for your family. Both reactions are totally understandable. School is where teachers and students want and need to be. Will there be more snow days? Personally I hope not… however I invite you to accept each day as a gift and rejoice in whatever the Lord has planned for us!

Poetry Meet

On Wednesday February 12 Woodstock Christian School held it's first annual  Poetry Meet.  20 students from grades 1-4 recited poetry in front of an audience of judges, parents and students.  The poetry was silly, thoughtful, exciting and serious!  Most of all the poetry celebrated the relationships we have with one another and God's awesome creation.  Praise God for a successful and rewarding gathering!

Enjoy this (very) short clip from 3 of our presentations!

And the winners are.....

Celebrating Care

On or around Valentine's Day, the JK class always makes a point of delivering cookies to area businesses that care for people. We visit places like the fire station, the police department, the hospital, nursing homes and other social service providers. The class takes the time the day before to bake up around 15 dozen (!!!) sugar cookies, decorate them and make special Valentines for accompanying the cookies. We do so because we want to say "thank you" to those peope who make Woodstock such a great place to live!

Thank you to all the parents who helped out with our adventure this year! It was a blast- and a little extra fun was had by those who got to hop up into the fire trucks at the fire station!

We are blessed to be a blessing.

Encouragement

"We’re really glad you’re here, we don’t say that enough to each other here.” This is one of the lines from precious internet sensation, Kid President, in his YouTube address to newborns (Kid President's Letter To A Person On Their First Day Here). It’s an excellent reminder for us all to appreciate one another. As we live in community here at Woodstock Christian School we can all look for ways to encourage each other daily. Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” In the end of the video, Kid President reminds us "Love is always louder... Even if hate has a bull-horn, love is louder. So let your life be love.... Things can be better.” What a great reminder! As students, parents and teachers, let’s look for ways to live in faith, learning and community and search out how to encourage one another and spread love.

Teachers and snow days....

Snow days: Today was another snow day…for some parents these days are welcomed and enjoyed, a day of taking life easy, relaxing at home and enjoying activities with their children for which they otherwise have no time. For other parents it is a frustrating day of trying to quickly arrange childcare so they can still go to their jobs, or a disruption of other plans, or wishing to see their children learning at school (where they ought to be). Both are very understandable.

So what do teachers do on snow days? Yes, all of us would have loved to teach today- there were so many things we had planned to do and were looking forward to in our classes. However, we altered our plans and instead met together at WCS for an additional PD day.  We continued our work which began last week Friday, in developing a new report card which will better reflect the growth of students during each term and which will be more ‘parent friendly’. We were also led by Tracy Bulthuis in a session understanding learning difficulties many of our students encounter. In order to do our tasks as educators better (teaching for excellence is one of our teaching goals!), we value extra time like today to work together.

Another day of learning ..and teaching at WCS!

What are you reading today?

We are a week into our MS Read-A-Thon, and this snow day provides lots of opportunity to get some extra minutes in. What is on your reading list today or this week?

Milk Mats Made by Grade 1!

Mrs. Racicots grade one class has been working together on the "Milk Bag Project".  Below is a description of how this program works and a few pictures of our students working together for this great cause!

Recently I was introduced the "Milk Bag Project". Here is a short explanation of how it works. When you purchase milk (set of 3 bags) from the grocery store, the outer bag is what is used. These bags are cut into strips and are interlocked together like a chain. Then they are then woven into mats. These mats are distributed in mission fields to families that need beds for themselves and their children as well as to hospitals for sick patients. Milk Bags are already Antibacterial, therefore the plastic mats reduce the incidence of insect borne illnesses, they are easy to clean, and provide a comfortable and safe place for adults and children to sleep.

One of the reasons this idea hit home for me and drew me to get involved is that I learned my Opa (before he passed away) helped my Oma by cutting the bags so she could make mats. I was so inspired by them working together, and realized ANYONE can help in someway!!

There is somewhat of an assembly line that is already happening in our communities, which is how it makes it possible for each and every person to contribute! We demonstrated this very thing in the Grade 1 class, some children cut the bags while others linked the chains and we finished the process by weaving them together on the loom that was so generously built and donated by Mr. Mabbott. The children loved the experience and remarkably they were all very good at it! Thank you to everyone who has been sending milk bags in for this project! Please continue to send them as we plan to make many mats to bless many people!  ~Karen Mitchell

God Loves Me So Much

GOD LOVES ME SO MUCH!!

This morning, students & staff began the week with a chapel based on the school theme: ROOTED IN LOVE. Ben Gillen from Innerkip Presbyterian Church with his musicians Gop and Lauren led us in music and message. We were reminded that our AMAZING, GREAT, AWESOME God wants to make His home in our hearts. We can trust Him, rely on Him always.
God invites us to have a direct personal relationship with Him, not a relationship through our parents, grandparents, teachers, pastors. They show us Christ's love, they walk alongside us in our walk, but we personally are welcomed into His arms. He LOVES us so much- His love is so wide, so deep, so high and so long!
We are challenged to encounter God's love in a fresh way today! In our living at school, at home, with our friends, our family and our community, we respond by showing others our love which mirrors Christ's love to us. God loves you and me!
